RIFLE — The 170-acre Water Creek Fire continued to burn in heavy timber 10 miles north of Rifle Monday afternoon.
However, the majority of the smoke that was visible in the area today was from the large fires burning near Flagstaff, Ariz., according to David Boyd, spokesman for the Northwest Colorado Bureau of Land Management.
“Fire activity is increasing with the high winds this afternoon,” Boyd said of the Rifle fire. “Firefighters are allowing the fire to reach natural containment points, such as aspen and sagebrush meadows, which are not burning much despite the winds.”
No homes or structures were threatened, he said. About 100 firefighters were working the fire today, and the number of firefighters was to be significantly reduced Tuesday as firefighters shift into a monitoring mode for the fire.
