Equine Podiatry: The Reality Behind ‘No Foot, No Horse'
Glenwood Veterinary Clinic is proud to host Brian Fraley DVM and Matt Taydus CJF as the guest speakers for its fifth annual horse owner's continuing education seminar. Fraley and Taydus are recognized nationally and internationally as experts in equine podiatry and will speak to clients of Glenwood Veterinary Clinic and the general public on multiple topics related to the equine foot. There will also be short seminars on other subjects related to equine and small animal veterinary medicine.The seminar is at the Glenwood Springs Community Center on Friday, Sept. 10, and starts with informal discussion and a buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. and lecture at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but registration is required and seating is limited. Fraley and Taydus are an integral part of the prestigious Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's Sport Horse Program in Lexington, Ky.
Fraley sits on the board of directors for the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, is on the Kentucky Horse Council's Health and Welfare Committee, and has been actively involved in the AFA/AAEP Farrier Short Course, which promotes the veterinary/farrier relationships in the U.S.
Matt Taydus graduated at the top of his class in 2005 and completed the masters course in horseshoeing from the Kentucky Horseshoeing School. He apprenticed with Conrad Trow, and received his certified farrier status from the AFA in 2006.
Fraley and Taydus will discuss corrective shoeing for laminitis and navicular syndrome, demonstrate the latest in glue-on shoe technology, and will show some of their most interesting cases from their work in Kentucky.
CMC auditions
Colorado Mountain College Theatre is holding open auditions for its fall performances, A.R. Gurney's “Sylvia” and John Cariani's “Almost, Maine.” Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 1 & 2 at CMC's New Space Theatre at Spring Valley. Those auditioning should prepare a 1-2 minute monologue and will be asked to do a cold read from the script (scripts are available at the CMC Glenwood Center and at Spring Valley). Digital Camera Club
Local photographers will continue the journey through the wonderful world of digital photography with the Digital Camera Club. Join in the discussions on lighting, focus, color, angles, lenses, software, and all aspects of turning a photo into art. Landfill closed for Labor Day
The West Garfield County Landfill will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The landfill will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with our regular operating hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Grand Opening for three solar arrays in Silt
Everyone is invited to the grand opening for Silt's three new solar arrays at Town Hall, Silt Senior Housing and the Wastewater Treatment Plant.The event will be on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 10-11 a.m., at Silt Town Hall, 231 N. Seventh, and includes comments from key players, tours and a reception.
The three arrays are part of the Garfield New Energy Communities Initiative, which is using grant money from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to install solar arrays on public buildings from Parachute to Carbondale. More information at www.GarfieldCleanEnergy.org.
Back to School night
Glenwood Springs High School's Back to School Night is Wednesday, Sept. 1, beginning at 6:30 pm. The evening will begin in the Jeannie Miller Theater for a short introductory address after which parents will break out to visit each of their child's teachers in their rooms.
Mini College open house
Children's Mini College is hosting an open house Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 4-6 p.m. Mini College is a part-day preschool for children ages 3-6. We are located in Glenwood Springs at Colorado Mountain College, 1402 Blake Ave. We have several openings in our morning and afternoon classes so take this opportunity to come and meet the teachers, tour our beautiful school and join us for refreshments. Rifle church celebration
Saint Mary Catholic Church has been in the community for 100 years. Although Catholics were in the area before that, it was Sept. 4, 1910, when the first resident pastor, the Rev. Christopher V. Walsh, was assigned to Rifle. The original church was on East Fifth Street. A new church was built on East Seventh Street and Birch Avenue. 100th anniversary events include: Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., mass with Archbishop Charles Chaput presiding; Saturday, Sept. 4, 8-11 a.m., Knights of Columbus breakfast, open house, tours of the church, reminiscing; Sunday, Sept. 5, 1:30-5p.m., anniversary picnic.For more information contact Irene 625-1800.
