Matthew Thomas Jankovsky, of Boulder, died with his family gathered around him on Aug. 1 at Denver Health Medical Center’s Rocky Mountain Trauma Center in Denver. He was 21.
Matt suffered a severe brain injury while riding a longboard skateboard in Broomfield on July 21. He passed away after receiving fabulous care for 11 days from EMTs, air ambulance staff, neurosurgeons, doctors, surgeons and nurses. Matt’s family is grateful for the care Matt received, which allowed them the time to be with Matt and say goodbye.
Matt was born in a log cabin on Aug. 19, 1983, in Juneau, Alaska, and moved with his family to Glenwood Springs when he was 2 years old. He attended Aspen Community School and Glenwood Springs Middle School, and graduated in 2001 from Glenwood Springs High School. In July 2005, he received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Matt was extremely well-loved. He was on the Sunlight and Colorado Rocky Mountain School ski teams. He was an extreme skier and kayaker. He was a river guide for Up Tha Creek in Glenwood, and was a lifeguard at the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, and most recently lifeguarded for the city of Boulder Recreation Department.
He was an accomplished artist, and won a Glenwood Springs Art Guild scholarship, and the principal’s award from Glenwood Springs High School principal Mike Wells, who purchased one of Matt’s drawings that hangs in the high school.
Matt is survived by his mother, Liz Meador, and his father, Tom Jankovsky, both of Glenwood Springs; two sisters, Bridget Jankovsky and Eva Jankovsky, of Glenwood Springs; and many friends who loved him.
Matt will be cremated, and his ashes scattered in the places he loved the most: Colorado’s mountains and rivers, in the ocean off the Del Mar, Calif., coastline, and at his family’s ranch in San Diego.
A memorial service honoring Matt’s life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at Sunlight Mountain Resort. People are asked to bring a blanket since the service will be outside. Shrimp tacos and pie, Matt’s favorite things to eat, will be served. There will also be an art exhibit of Matt’s work.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt’s name to Wilderness Workshop, P.O. Box 1442, Carbondale, CO 81623, or Stepstone Center for Social Justice, 711 Main St., Carbondale, CO 81623.
