There's no shortage of party options on New Year's Eve

Print Comment
It looks like 2006 will walk in on some nice hot legs this year.

Restaurants and bars from Carbondale to Parachute are serving up sexy crab leg dinners. The surf and turf combination is a popular one at nearly every destination this Dec. 31.

The last day of the old year, like Mardi Gras before Lent, is a time for overindulgence before vowing to stick to new years resolutions. That's why restaurants like River's, The Bayou, New Castle Café, Miner's Claim and Columbine Restaurant, among others, are bringing out their most decadent menus.

"It's pretty fancy," said Reto Luci, of his planned New Years Eve buffet at Columbine Restaurant.

But the last day of the year, which bleeds into the first day of the next is about celebrating. And area bars have insured that people will have several options to ring in the new year at a party.

Most places offer free midnight champagne toasts and drink specials.

"We're just going to have a big ol' party here," said Debbie Greene, the bartender at The White Buffalo in Battlement Mesa. "We're going to have a DJ and a disco ball. We're going to be dancing on the bar."

Many bars will bring in live music for the special occasion. Louie and The Lizards will give their final performance at The Brickyard Square in Rifle.

"It should be a great party," said Brickyard manager and co-owner Timothy Fifer. "The last time (Louie & The Lizards) were here they rocked the house."

SoulFeel, this year's Local's Choice winner for best band, will perform at the Sunlight Mountain Inn Bed & Breakfast.

There are a few places that are straying from the glam and glitz of the typical grand finale for the year. The Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs is hosting a murder mystery dinner theater, and Burning Mountain Bowl in New Castle will have a special cosmic bowling party for people of all ages.

Diners should plan on making reservations. The over-the-top menus at most restaurants are likely to draw crowds.
