It sounds so simple, but one day Bob Johnson decided to get off the couch and get involved.
Johnson's desire to get involved and show support for the troops led to the birth of Operation Vacation. The program brings Fort Carson soldiers and their families to the Glenwood Springs area for a weekend vacation in the mountains.
To make the program go, Johnson needed help. Several sponsors lined up to help, donating goods, hotel rooms, vehicles, pool passes, meals and more.
Some of the local businesses that have helped make Operation Vacation a success include: Berthod Motors, Colorado Mountain Express, Cooper Corner, Dairy Kreme, Dragon's Lair, Glenwood Caverns, Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company, Holiday Inn Express, the Hot Springs Pool, JM Adventures, Juicy Lucy's Steakhouse, Roaring Fork Outfitters, Rosi's Little Bavarian Restaurant, Sunlight Mountain Resort and Bike Shop, The Rendezvous, Vicki Lee Green Realtors, Village Inn, Whitewater Rafting and Yampah Spa.
There's no way most of us can comprehend the stress of military life. The anxiety of deployment has to be difficult on the soldier, then you add the strain of being separated from one's family.
It's not easy being a soldier, and Johnson saw that, then went to work to bring a little happiness and relaxation to families who greatly deserve it and who have earned it.
Starting in August, so far six families have made the trip from Colorado Springs to Glenwood Springs. They have rafted the Colorado, skied at Sunlight, soaked in the hot springs, explored the caverns, fished the Roaring Fork, visited Doc Holliday's grave, eaten splendid food and enjoyed unsurpassed hospitality - thanks to Johnson and the selfless sponsors that wanted to make a difference.
Operation Vacation has been a tremendous success on all fronts. It's not clear how much longer this program will continue but regardless, it's done a great job.
Six families have memories of a great time in Glenwood Springs. Johnson and the businesses involved should be thanked for making this special project happen.
Operation Vacation is a great example of what happens when people get involved and want to make a difference.
