GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Last year was a good year for nonprofits in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The Aspen Community Foundation (ACF) granted $4.8 million to more than 300 nonprofits, nearly 80 percent of which are located in the Roaring Fork Valley.
"We were delighted," said program officer Sharyn Goodson. "We made a concerted effort to bring in as much as possible so we could donate more to the community."
And that they did.
ACF raised $1.4 million more than in 2005 and distributed to approximately 75 more nonprofit organizations.
Development officer Nikki Beinstein Strait said they weren't anticipating that type of growth, but they were happy with the way things have gone for the foundation.
"We want to be the nexus of the philanthropy in the valley," Beinstein Strait said. "We just want to be able to give more and encourage people to give more."
The foundation works like an administrative assistant for people who want to start a nonprofit organization, but don't have the time to deal with all the necessities that go along with it.
"Basically we take care of all the paperwork, legal stuff and operations that donors may not want to, or have time to do themselves," Goodson said.
One program in particular is the In Focus: Pre-Collegiate Program Scholarship Fund that was initially started by Barbara and John Gold. The fund helps participants of the pre-collegiate program in their pursuit of higher education.
There are 108 donor-advised funds working through the foundation that provide the majority of the funds for the nonprofits.
"They (donors) tell us where they want the money to go, and we make sure it happens," Goodson said. She added that they work with the donors to get them in touch with the organizations to which they wish to donate.
The donor-advised programs were responsible for $3.8 million last year. The other $1 million came from ACF's fundraising programs like Early Childhood Education Initiative, the Harley Baldwin Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Emergency Assistance Fund, the Senior Prescription Fund, and the EBF Cultural Diversity Fund.
ACF was founded in 1980 by the Aspen Skiing Co. and currently supports nonprofits serving Pitkin, Garfield and west Eagle Counties. Its focuses on the areas of health and human services, education and strengthening community.
