RIFLE - El Distrito Escolar del Garfield Re-2 quiere ser parte de la comunidad hispana.
Translation: Garfield School District Re-2 is reaching out to its Latino community.
Helping the district is the Aspen Community Foundation (ACF). The school district received a $23,000 grant from ACF to provide funds to expand the resources needed to aid in the education of the Hispanic community that attends schools within the district. Funding of $15,000 will be used for expanding the parent liaison position at Rifle Middle School, currently held by Lupita Pina, $5,000 will be used for staff development and $3,000 will be to purchase translation headsets.
"The Aspen Community Foundation has always been for bridging the gap between the Anglo and Hispanic students," said Theresa Hamilton, director of districtwide services for Garfield School District Re-2. "We wouldn't have been able to fund these projects without their help."
The translation headsets will provide real-time translation for parents and students that may not speak English fluently. Whereas in the past, speeches and presentations would have the English version interrupted by the Spanish translation, these headsets will eliminate the dual language presentations, providing a more efficient use of time.
Hamilton added that not only did ACF fully fund the district's grant request of $21,000, but that it provided an additional $2,000.
Last year, ACF granted $4.8 million to more than 300 nonprofits, nearly 80 percent of which are located in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The majority of the funds granted to Re-2 ($18,000) was provided by ACF's unrestricted funds while the remaining $5,000 came from the EBF (Ellen Beth Freedman) Cultural Diversity Fund.
"We are very thankful for their help and continued support," Hamilton said. "We've had a great relationship with them."
