RANGELEY, Colo. — Taking the mats with 13 other teams at the Rangely Invitational, the Glenwood wrestling team earned a fourth-place finish on Saturday.
Lance Tsosie, at 160 pounds, Tyler Rossow (171) and Greg Orosz (285) all wrestled to second-place finishes, Nick Croissant took third at 189 pounds and Matt Davis (140 pounds) and Josh Bower (215) both placed fourth.
"With three wrestlers out (Tyler Thulson, Vincent Tsosie and Blake Newby), we are pretty satisfied with out fourth-place finish," said Glenwood coach Miles Cook in an e-mail. "With those three in the lineup, we are pretty confident we would have been right in the mix to move up a few places overall."
Davis finished out the tournament with three straight wins before accepting fourth place because Colorado High School Activity Association rules limit wrestlers to a maximum of five matches in a given day. Davis was forced to concede third place to Luke Hunter of Olathe despite having defeated him in the first round of the tournament 7-1.
Tsosie advanced to the finals after wins over Jaron Sparks of Central (fall, 1:21) and J.D. Jimenez of Olathe (fall, 3:53). In the finals, Tsosie lost to Colby Evans of Duquesne, 3-2.
Rossow defeated Daniel Mott of Duquesne (fall, 0:37) and Brady Gasaway of Coal Ridge (fall, 3:45) before losing to Coy Letlow of Hayden in the finals (fall, 3:08).
Croissant lost to the eventual champion Dennis Morgan of Soroco (fall, 5:36), then defeated Derek Trout of Central (fall, 2:03). In the finals, Croissant defeated Austin Sabatos of West Grand (fall 0:51).
Orosz defeated Aaron Neely of Olathe (fall, 1:05), Kenny Westfall of North Park (fall, 3:17), and Zach Harrin of Palisade (fall, 0:16) before losing in the finals to Jacob Evans of Duquesne, 7-3.
Coal Ridge, who had wrestlers suffering from strep and other illnesses, took 10th overall. Titan Keenan Grumley took second at 130 pounds and Gasaway placed third at 171 pounds.
"They wrestled pretty well," Coal Ridge head coach Rob Grumley said of Keenan and Gasaway. "Keenan had 16 kids in his bracket, and Brady had 12. They had a lot of good competition and did well."
Grand Valley took second in the tournament behind winner Duquesne.
