Demon freshmen go undefeated

The Glenwood Springs freshman boys basketball team finished up its regular season on Tuesday with its 15th win of the season. The Demons, under first-year head coach John Doose, never lost a game this year.

Players Kelbey Artaz, Garrett Brown, Russell Collins, Josh Galvin, Alex Guenther, Frank Houpt, Wyatt Israel, Taylor Mays, Austin Page, Tyler Raab, Adam Sadowski, Matt Vernie, Danny Weller and Travis Whittman all contributed to the team's undefeated mark.

FSN to broadcast state wrestling finals

Fox Sports Network Rocky Mountain will be broadcasting a one-hour, previously-taped show of the Class 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A Colorado state wrestling tournament finals.

The show will be on air on March 3 at 9:30 p.m. Replays of the Colorado state wrestling tournament finals are scheduled to air March 6 at noon; March 17 at noon; March 19 at noon; March 24 at 1 p.m. and Sun., 25 at 7:30 a.m.

The network also is scheduled to telecast the 4A and 5A boys and girls state basketball championship games from Boulder as part of their multi-year contract with the Colorado High School Activities Association. All four games will air March 10.

Registration for couples climbing class extended

The Tighten that Knot climbing class for married (or soon to be married) couples is going to be offered on Wednesdays from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center from Feb. 21-March 21.

It's cheaper than a therapist, more fun than a session at the marriage counselor, and more powerful than the best divorce attorney. This class corresponds with our KidKare hours, so parents have no excuse not to join. Course will culminate with an optional field trip to the Puoux climbing area to test what you have learned on real rock.

The class is for legal and consenting adults, and per couple costs $80 for residents and $96 for nonresidents. Add $20 for the March 24 field trip to Puoux.

Registration is needed by Feb. 21.

Youth climbing class at GSCC

The Glenwood Springs Community Center is offering a climbing class that provides local youth with the skills and information to take their climbing to the next level. Participants learn advanced rock skills to prepare them for outdoor climbing and train to compete in statewide bouldering /climbing competitions in a fun, informative atmosphere. Last three classes in April will be on real rock, changing the class time to 3:45-6:30 p.m. Pick-up and drop-off will be at the Glenwood Springs Community Center.

The classes are for climbers ages 7-14 and the cost is $75 for residents and $90 for nonresidents. The class will start on March 1 and go until April 26. Registration is needed by Feb. 22.

Baseball clinic coming to Rifle on Saturday

Washington state high school baseball hall-of-fame coach Peter Doumit Sr., along with the Rifle High School baseball coaches will be hosting a one-day baseball clinic in the gyms at Rifle High School on Saturday.

Doumit has coached nine players that went on to play professionally and received the Northwest Baseball Coaches Achievement Award in 2006.

The clinic will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m. for players ages 8-12 and from 12:30-4 p.m. for players ages 13-18. The cost is $10. Brochures are available at the Rifle Recreation Department. Registration can be done in advance or half an hour before the clinic.

Wrestling clinic in New Castle

The New Castle Recreation Department will be holding a coach's clinic for interested coaches for the Gladiator Wrestling program on Feb. 21 at Riverside Middle School at 5:30 p.m. Program philosophies, techniques, and drills will be presented.

In Thursday's edition of the Post Independent, it was incorrectly printed that Sam McKinley scored 33 points, 20 in the fourth quarter in Tuesday night's Grand Valley boys vs. Meeker game. McKinley actually totaled 30 points, 17 in the fourth quarter. The Post Independent apologizes for this error.
