GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. A 19-year-old Carbondale woman was killed Tuesday in a one-car accident on County Road 115 last night. Three other passengers were injured and taken to the hospital.
Christina Hernandez, who was the driver of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Garfield County coroner, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Two of her passengers Aspen residents Luis Orellana, 28, and Enrique Orellana, 31 were both taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs with serious injuries, the patrol reported. Passenger Nuvia Hernandez, 25, of Carbondale, suffered moderate injuries; she was treated and released from Valley View.
The crash occurred at about 6:47 p.m. When emergency personnel arrived, they found a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche on its right side on the roadway. A preliminary investigation indicated Hernandez was driving north on the road, which leads to Spring Valley, between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, when the vehicle went off the road to the right. Hernandez apparently overcorrected to the left, causing the vehicle to roll one and one-quarter times, ejecting all of the occupants, according to the state patrol.
Chemical tests for the driver are pending. According to the CSP press release, issued Wednesday, speed is considered a factor in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
