Preschool plans move to new facility

USDA grant, favorable loan will allow Our School to keep its rates the same

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — The Our School Preschool hopes to move into a new location at 3126 Grand Ave. by July, a building the preschool is buying thanks to a $50,000 grant and a favorable loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"Oh we were drinking champagne at the closing table," Tracy Stanfield joked about getting the grant and loan. Stanfield is president of the preschool's board of directors.

The school has been looking for a place to open a new facility for a couple of years, Stanfield said. But the chances of finding something affordable within the city limits were "slim to none." Stanfield said the school is a nonprofit that aims to provide affordable quality child care to working families throughout the valley.

Continuing to carry out that mission would have been impossible under the preschool's current commercial lease. It was known as a triple net lease that increases by 3 percent each year.

"Eventually it was going to price us right out of the valley," Stanfield said.

The preschool didn't want to have the cost of property dictate how it would decide to conduct business, so its staff started a capital campaign.

"We could raise our rates, but then we wouldn't be the school we wanted to be," Stanfield said. "We basically hit the pavement and held our hands out," she said, adding that the preschool is very appreciative of all the support it has received from parents and community members.

At 10:45 a.m. on Monday, May 14, USDA Rural Development state director Mike Bennett will present a ceremonial check to the school at 3126 Grand Ave. The funds are available through the Rural Development Community Facility Program. The program is designed to develop community facilities for public use in rural areas.

The entryway to the building will be adorned with tiles decorated by donors. People who purchased tiles can decorate them any way they wish.

"We just really want to thank everyone for believing in us and supporting us and seeing us through," she said.
