Three CRMS kayakers end spring on high note
Colorado Rocky Mountain Schools kayaking team wrapped up its spring season May 12-13 and placed three kayakers in the top of the individual standings of the Colorado High School Whitewater Cup.CRMS junior Jake Sakson finished third overall in the boys category after taking first place in the freestyle race at the seasons final competition in Golden May 12-13. In the girls standings, freshman Joan Sundeen was second, while Jessi Heitzman took third overall. Both paddled well at the Golden races, tying for first in freestyle, and Sundeen took third in the slalom.
CRMS junior Molly Holmes placed second in the slalom in Golden.
Even though the season is over, several CRMS students will compete in a handful of kayak races including FIBArk, the nations oldest and most prestigious races, in Salida June 14-17.
Glenwood Ice U13 girls go 4-1 over weekend
The Glenwood Ice U13 girls soccer team chalked up four wins and one loss playing a home game and in the Grand Mesa Invitational Tournament in Grand Junction.Friday evening the Ice hosted the Boulder Nova at Gates and posted a 3-0 shutout. Midway through the first half Glenwoods Michaela Mansfield got the first goal with an assist from Josi Pearson. In the second half, Hope Whitman of the Ice passed to Lily McSwain, who headed the ball into the goal. Then Haley Oddo worked the ball around the Boulder keeper to Corey Gera, who kicked it in for the games final goal.
The Glenwood girls then traveled to Grand Junction for an intense weekend of play at the Grand Mesa Tournament. The Ice first played Steamboat and again put up a shutout, this time with a 4-0 score. Mansfield, Whitman, Holly Brown and Savanna Pearson each scored one goal in the win.
The Ice then beat the Bear Creek Strykers 4-0. One minute into the game McSwain took advantage and scored when the Bear Creek keeper fell. Josi Pearson scored on a penalty kick three minutes later. Mansfield and Madi Goodstein scored the remaining goals for Glenwood.
In the Ices fourth game of the weekend, the Ice suffered its only loss of the tournament by a 2-1 score to Durango. Mansfield scored Glenwoods only goal.
Glenwood was guaranteed a second place medal for the tournament going into its final game against the Basalt Lightning. Goals were scored by Mansfield, McSwain, Sadie Stilman, Gera, Whitman, Josi Pearson and Brown on the way to Glenwoods 7-0 victory.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Ice will participate in Glenwoods tournament at Gates Soccer Complex.
Skateboard lessons in Carbondale
Summer skateboard lessons are being offered again by the town of Carbondale with an instructor, a professional skateboarder, who will be able to teach kids everything they need to know about skateboarding. We offer private lessons and age specific group sessions. The group sessions are recommended only for beginners or intermediate level skateboarders. Outdoor Club hitting Carbondale
It is time for the Carbondale Summer Outdoor Club, which has a wide variety of activities for kids this summer, from whitewater rafting to hiking and camping. Prices per trip range from $20 to $45. Information: Becky, 704-4116, or come into Carbondales Town Hall and pick up a brochure.
Youth baseball and softball in Carbondale
The Carbondale Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the summer youth baseball and softball leagues. This is for ages 7 and up. The cost for the Coach Pitch league is $55 plus a $25 uniform deposit. The cost for the baseball and softball league is $60 plus a $25 uniform deposit. Information: 704-4115.
Aqua fit classes in Carbondale
The Carbondale Pool is offering Aqua Fit classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:15-8:15 a.m. at the Carbondale Pool. Participants can register for classes at the Carbondale Recreation Department. Information: 704-4115.
CORRECTION
In the May 19 edition of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent, a high school seniors story for Grand Valley High School omitted senior Mitch Belden due to an error on a roster given to the Post Independent that said he was a junior.Belden is indeed a senior and a member of the fab five on the boys basketball team, which led Grand Valley to the first team championship in the schools history.
