GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — The first full day of the 110th annual Strawberry Days festival started off with a bang on Saturday. There is nothing like watching a man get shot from a cannon to give you that small-town feel.
The cannon was blue and red, cartoonish looking, stubby and round but still big enough to fit a grown man into.
A man with nerves of steel.
That man was Baron Von Hamburger.
Baron Von Hamburger has swum the English Channel and climbed to the top of Mount Everest, just on his way to get a cup of coffee, he said in jest. So getting shot out of a cannon is no big deal, just another Strawberry Days festival for him.
"He makes the lion tamer look like your little old grandmother," the ring leader announced.
Then the Baron jumped into the cannon, the fuse was lit, and the countdown began.
... Three ... two ... one ... Boom.
Confetti shot out of the cannon and hung on the breeze for a moment above the crowd before it danced, slowly in tight swirls, to the ground. Smoke lingered in the end of the cannon barrel as the Baron peaked his head through. Burnt and smoking, with shredded apparel, he slowly spilled out of the cannon and onto the ground.
"Did I make it?" he questioned his accomplices.
No, he hadn't.
But it would take nothing less than being blown apart to keep the Baron from enjoying this annual weekend of public revelry in Glenwood Springs.
People from up and down the valley lined the streets in anticipation of the annual Strawberry Days Parade that started at 10 in the morning. The sun shone, people smiled and kids scrambled for tossed candy from the various floats.
Neighbors, friends, family and tourists of all ages came to town for the festivities. Bustling Grand Avenue was transformed from a busy traffic-jammed street into a carnival for the day. Complete with clowns in go-carts designed to look like little cars, Boy Scout Troops and horse-drawn carriages that remind residents and visitors alike that Glenwood was once a small-western town.
Glenwood can seem like a big town, especially with the way it continues to grow. But when one of the old-fashioned fire engines quit running, a group of citizens jumped from their curbside seats to assist in pushing the vehicle on its route. The engineer was able to fire up the engine once again, and the pushers returned to the curb. Things like that paint perfect small-town images: people doing whatever it takes to keep the parade moving.
Glenwood can grow. But as long as the Strawberry Days festival is around, Glenwood will always be a small town, one weekend a year.
