GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Every year, Pat Fitzgerald gets to quit his day job as owner and broker at Glenwood Brokers Real Estate and play in the Symphony in the Valley Orchestra.

Fitzgerald plays saxophone and clarinet, along with 69 other talented musicians from all over Colorado in the 13-year-old orchestra.

The orchestra plays at the Symphony Swing in the Valley event held at the Hotel Colorado at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, for it's fourth consecutive year. Usually the gala is a fundraiser for the orchestra, but for the first time this year's net proceeds benefit the Rotary High School Scholarship Fund and the YouthZone Restorative Justice Program.

"We're very excited and passionate about what YouthZone does," said Fitzgerald, coordinator of the Rotary event. "In particular their Restorative Justice Program."

That program intervenes with young people who have had their first brush with the law, Fitzgerald said.

The Rotary High School Scholarship Fund gives out seven to eight scholarships a year to deserving students. The students show evidence of leadership, moral values, high character and financial need.

A round of golf, a catered dinner with matching wines and spa gift certificates are just a few of the packages to be auctioned off live at the event, thanks to generous donations, Fitzgerald said.

Music for the night will be provided by the full 70-piece orchestra, a jazz ensemble and a small ensemble with vocalists. The orchestra will play Big Band music in the style of Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and others. People always enjoy dancing at the event, Fitzgerald said.

"It's the most fun music event we do," Fitzgerald said. "This one we get to let it hang out."

The suggestion to wear "festive attire" means whatever you're happy with, said Fitzgerald. Guests will be welcomed in anything from jeans to a tux.

Every year has been a sellout. Fitzgerald said there is one woman who reserves a whole table every year, and that many end up asking if they can reserve tickets for the next year when the night is done.
