ENLARGEMembers of the Garfield County All-Hazards Response Team search the area south of Glenwood Springs by air for two men suspected of shooting a Glenwood Springs police officer late Sunday night. The officer survived the shooting.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Authorities are still searching for two suspects in the shooting of a police officer Sunday night just south of the Glenwood Springs Airport.
The bullet was stopped by a bulletproof vest, and the officer did not sustain serious injuries. The officer's name hasn't been released. Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson wanted the officer to relax at home with family and said releasing his name might cause people to try to contact him.
Garfield County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $2,000 for anyone with information leading to an arrest or prosecution of suspects involved. Anyone with information can call 945-0101 and remain anonymous.
According to police, a Glenwood Springs Police officer was doing a visual check of a storage area just south of the airport. He observed someone jump down off of a fence. He then noticed two males walking away from him. He gave several verbal requests for them to stop. One of the men turned and fired multiple shots, hitting the officer once in the chest from around 10 to 20 feet away. The officer returned multiple gunshots as the two men fled south, but was unsure if he hit either man, Wilson said.
The investigation shifted on Monday from search tactics more toward investigation.

Around 9:45 a.m., law enforcement agents from several departments headed indoors to a debriefing with the Garfield County All-Hazards Response Team. At a temporary command center at Sopris Elementary School, Wilson said he anticipated scaling back search efforts and focusing more on investigation.
Several methods were utilized in the dark Sunday night and Monday morning including search via helicopter, heat detecting devices and foot and vehicle patrols, according to Wilson. No suspects had been located.
Wilson said the incident occurred near a police impound lot, where there has been a long history of break-ins. Investigation will be run by the Garfield County Sheriff's Office from this point forward. The incident happened right at the city limits. With the sheriff's office running things, jurisdiction won't be questioned. Glenwood's police department also wants an outside agency heading the investigation since it involves shots exchanged with one of its own officers. Wilson said the sheriff's office can bring a fresher set of eyes to what could be an emotional case for Glenwood Springs Police officers.
"We're just very fortunate that the officer wasn't injured," he said, adding that it's standard procedure for his officers to wear bulletproof vests.
Law enforcement from Carbondale, Rifle, Garfield County and Colorado State Patrol also joined the Glenwood Springs Police at the scene.

The suspects are described as
• Latino male, 18-20 years old, very short hair, clean shaven, red hooded sweatshirt, lace-up boots, jeans or dark pants.
• Latino male, 18-20 years old, very short hair, clean shaven, dark blue or black hooded sweatshirt, white sneakers, jeans or dark pants.
• Latino male, 18-20 years old, very short hair, clean shaven, dark blue or black hooded sweatshirt, white sneakers, jeans or dark pants.
