GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — This summer, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Board approved additional vaccine requirements for school-aged children.
Each school district's nurse is responsible for providing immunization information to parents. However, as new requirements are made and back-to-school preparations and shopping are under way, children may be due for shots.
After kindergarten shots, children typically are not due for vaccinations until 11 to 12 years of age.
Next school year, it will be required for sixth- and 10th-graders to have one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, or whooping cough). In addition, the following shots are recommended: Hepatitis A vaccine, meningococcal (Menactra) vaccine, two doses of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine if there is not a physician documented history of disease, and for females, the new cervical cancer prevention vaccine, Gardasil.

Health care providers offer the required and recommended vaccines for school-aged children, which can save money in the long run (vaccines are more expensive for those older than 18 years). Back-to-school check-ups may ensure children's shots are up-to-date as their immunization records follow them through life. They also ensure that children are protected, to the best of a parent's ability, against vaccine preventable diseases.
Garfield County Public Health, located in both Rifle and Glenwood Springs, offers these vaccinations, as well as infant and adult vaccinations. For children aged 2 months to 18 years of age, all vaccinations are $10 per dose. Public Health will also review all immunization records for completeness.

• Glenwood Springs: 2014 Blake Ave., south side of Valley View Hospital, 945-6614 • Rifle: 195 W. 14th St., across the street from City Market, 625-5200 • Parachute: Public Health comes to Battlement Mesa Willow Park Apartments the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Call the Rifle office to make appointments and for directions. Types of immunizations available: • Hepatitis A: two-dose series separated by 6 months; • Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, or whooping cough): one-time dose (for 11 years and older) • Meningococcal: one-time dose (for 11 years and older); and • Cervical cancer prevention vaccine (Gardasil): three-dose series: dose 1 at elected date, dose two at two months after dose 1, and dose 3 six months after dose 1 |
