GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — The right turn lane off Grand Avenue into Glenwood Springs High School is scheduled to be complete by the end of the week.
The turn lane will provide a route into the shared access point for both the Van Rand Center and the school. Some Highway 82/Grand Avenue lane closures near Glenwood Springs High School will continue with ongoing construction.
The southbound right lane on Grand Avenue is closed daily after 9 a.m. Monday through Friday for the turn lane and shared access construction, according to ARC Integrated Program Management Inc.
Once the turn lane is done, parents can use it to drop off students. They'll be able to use a circular drive on the south side of the high school and west of the new staff and visitor parking lot, said assistant principal Gayla Rowe.
"It's much more convenient," she said. "You don't have to go down Park Drive and then go all the way around Coach Miller Drive."
The traffic signal standing alone in front of the high school will also be moved up to the north side of 15th Street. The move is tentatively planned for some time Thursday, temporarily closing the northbound right lane of Grand Avenue and access at 15th Street. When it's done, there will be a standard T intersection at 15th Street. Northbound vehicles would then be able to stop right at the intersection instead of set back from it.
The colored crosswalk just south of 15th Street is also being relocated closer to the 15th Street intersection. This will be done in three phases that last three days each, ARC said, but one southbound lane and two northbound lanes will be open at all times. The crosswalk work started Monday and should last about 10 days.
As a temporary measure until the school's new student lot on the north side of campus is complete in the spring, students were issued permits to park in one of three places: the lot at the northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Coach Miller Drive and 14th Street, the new lot south of the school adjacent to the Van Rand Center, and the lot west of the district office.
Only the 15 seniors with the highest GPAs get to park in the new lot south of campus.
Rowe said the temporary parking plan is working out well.
"We have plenty of parking during the day," she said.
