RIFLE - Bernie Boettcher was up to the task at hand once again on Saturday as he added another race victory to his resume in Rifle's Grand River Gallop 5K run.
Silt's Boettcher, whose comfortable margin of victory in most races resembles that of the great Secretariat in the '73 Belmont Stakes, was timed in 18 minutes, 44 seconds to give him a near two-minute margin of victory over runner-up Dennis Webb.
"Every time I go out, I just do the best that I can. I always feel each race is an opportunity to do that, and I try," said Boettcher, who is gearing up for the Japan Ibigawa Marathon on Nov. 10.
Silt's Webb came to the finish line running well in 20:37, followed closely by Brad Palmer of Carbondale at 20:50.
Jenny LaBaw of New Castle made it two Gallop wins in two years as she outdistanced the women's field, turning in a very fast 20:59.
LaBaw, who is a personal fitness trainer, ran the Colorado Marathon and the Bolder Boulder in May, but has since taken some time off from racing.
"I've been running quite a bit lately," said LaBaw. "But I did take the summer off from racing."
Kay Graybill and Jeannie Blatter rounded out the top three places for the women with times of 22:40 and 23:40, respectively.
Race director Kris Daler was very pleased with the 50-runner turnout for the day and wanted to thank everyone who made the event possible.
"This is our eighth annual race," said Daler. "I'm so pleased that the community comes out to support this, and, of course, the volunteers and all the sponsors."
The race benefits the Grand River Hospital District, and CEO of that organization, Martie Wisdom, also wanted to give a big thank-you.
"We're just delighted to be a part of the charity race series, which promotes healthy activity in the community," said Wisdom. "The proceeds go to purchase health-care supplies for school nurses in the Garfield Re-2 and Parachute District 16 schools."
Following the race, Daler announced that next year's race series will include two new races, starting with West Glenwood's Sequoia Glen 5K on March 15, 2008.
Local fitness enthusiasts shouldn't put away the running shoes quite yet though. The 21st annual Turkey Day 5K is just on the horizon. It's Nov. 22 at the Glenwood Golf Course.
