Demon spikers take down Delta in three games
Glenwood takes the opportunity to work on plays and service
When you're practicing your jump serves by the third game, you know you're having a good day.
That's how Saturday went for Glenwood Springs' volleyball team, which rebounded from a sluggish start to down visiting Delta by game counts of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-14.
"We know we're doing well when (Scott) Nykerk lets us do jump serves," senior setter Carly Stillman joked, referring to the Demons' coach.
Glenwood crept along through the opener, with Delta forcing seven ties. The last came at 17-17, before the Demons used an 8-4 run to close out the visiting Panthers.
From the second game on, Glenwood was golden, outscoring Delta 50-26.
What changed for the Demons in the second and third games? It was all about controlling possession, Nykerk said.
"A lot of it was just back and forth, and then we started controlling the ball on our side. We kept our energy good, too. It was a slow-moving match at times."
After a tough, five-game win at Palisade on Thursday, the Demons welcomed the opportunity to work on plays and service. With the match more or less in hand midway through, they did just that.
"It's exciting," Stillman said. "We're finally starting to come together. We were working on some plays. Today was definitely the perfect game to start doing plays, to work on what we do in practice."
Stillman captained the Glenwood offense effectively, racking up 12 assists. She also smacked a couple of aces from the service line. Kelly Lawson chipped in with six assists.
Chelsea Vallario led the Demon net attack with seven kills. Toni Gottschalck added five kills, and Kelsie Hert came up with two big blocks.
A tough stretch of the schedule awaits Glenwood, which is establishing itself as one of the Class 4A Western Slope League's best at 3-0 in league and 6-1 overall.
On Thursday, the Demons have a date with Steamboat Springs and the following Thursday they face powerhouse Battle Mountain. In between all that, Glenwood travels to Roaring Fork on Tuesday and to Moffat County on Sept. 22.
"That'll be a good test for us," Nykerk said. "We've been improving every match."
