Eagle/Vail defeats PeeWees

The Glenwood Springs Youth Hockey Association PeeWees fell to Eagle/Vail Sunday, 7-4.

Despite the final score, it was a close game, with GWS and Eagle/Vail trading goals throughout the first two periods. Dawson Quint led the PeeWees, scoring three goals with assists from Grady Kellogg, Mark MacDonald and Brody Erickson. Ryan Fitzgerald also logged a goal for the PeeWees with an assist from Sam Carmer. Goalie Jake Fegan had his work cut out for him with 33 shots on goal, but got help from defenders Sam Carmer, Tais Dacuma and Cole Guy, who held Eagle-Vail's offense at bay.

The PeeWees will next face the Jr. Eagles, with two games at home. The first will be on Saturday at 3:15 p.m., followed by the second on Sunday at 7:15 a.m.

Holloway, Hauer win Rifle Sharpshooter scramble

Playing golf without snow and with warm temperatures on Sunday, Tad Holloway and Jeff Hauer combined for a 72 to take first in the gross division of the championship flight in the Rifle Creek Golf Course Sharpshooter Shootout two-person scramble on Sunday.

Cole and Tony Manupella finished behind Holloway and Hauer with a 74.

John Piper and Jennifer Lovan took the first net title of the championship flight with a 69.5 and were three strokes ahead of runners-up Chris Christensen and Jim Bradford.

Mark and David Sours won the first gross competition of the first flight, shooting a 78 for a four-stroke win over Stanley Wailes and Mitch Carter and Mike and Marsha McCormick, who tied at 82.

The first net division of the first flight ended in a two-way tie at 70.5 between Jim Roy and Darlene Byers and Joe Rando and Marv Layman.

Assistant girls hoops coach needed at Basalt High School

The Basalt High School girls basketball team is searching for an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Youth skiing programs on the horizon

The Carbondale Recreation Department is again holding youth skiing programs - the Snow Riders Club and Freestyle Club. First-graders and up can participate in this program, which begins Jan. 5, 2008, and is held at Sunlight Mountain Resort.

Registration forms are available at the Carbondale Recreation Department, which provides transportation to and from Sunlight.

Roan Plateau Soccer Association looking for coaches

The Roan Plateau Soccer Association is looking for coaches for its U18 boys team during the 2008 spring state league. This is a volunteer position with a time commitment spanning from March through the end of May.

Practices are held three days a week for two hours. The season consists of five home and five away games and travel could be as far as Pueblo. Coaches should have a competitive soccer background.
