Soccer is a big deal on the Western Slope. The proof is the makeup of the 2007 All-Western Colorado Sportswriters Boys Soccer Team.
Ten Western Slope high schools ranging geographically from Durango to Steamboat Springs are represented among the 22 players chosen by a panel of area sportswriters based in the region.
Southwestern League regular-season champion Montrose led the list with five honorees. Steamboat Springs had three players named to either the first or second team.
Battle Mountain, Durango, Eagle Valley, Montezuma-Cortez and Vail Mountain School had two players who made the roster. Additional players from Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs and Moffat County High Schools also made the cut.
Veteran Battle Mountain skipper David Cope was voted as the region's coach of the year. Cesar Castillo of nearby Eagle Valley High School was chosen as the 2007 player of the year.

Glenwood Springs' forward Travis Whitman, who earned a spot on the second team, was one of three sophomores to make the squad and the only area player. Whitman played most of his time at forward in the Demons' 6-9-1 season and was a key piece in Glenwood making it to the first round of the playoffs.
Whitman's best games came against Palisade when the sophomore netted a hat trick in the Demons' 7-2 win and against Steamboat Springs when he scored a goal 20 seconds into overtime to give the Demons a 2-1 victory.
Cope, in his 14th season as Battle Mountain's head coach, led the Huskies to their fourth straight Class 4A Western Slope League title and second consecutive appearance in second round 4A state playoff game.
In the recently completed season, Cope's Huskies finished with a 13-3-1 record.
Castillo, a junior forward, scored 26 goals with 12 assists on the year. His talents helped Eagle Valley earn a spot in the 4A state playoffs.
