Glenwood PeeWee's offense explodes in four wins
The Glenwood Springs PeeWee hockey team (11- to 12-year-olds) poured on a hearty helping of offense over the past four games, totaling 34 goals and four wins.
First, Glenwood defeated Laramie 6-5 and 7-0 on Dec. 1 and 2 respectively. Ariana Buxman, Cole Guy, Nate Nieslanik, Dawson Quint, Eric Abrahamovich and Brody Kellogg all scored in the first game, with Kellogg's score going down as the game winner in the second period.
Buxman went above and beyond a hat trick in game two, scoring four goals, while Guy, Quint and Abrahamovich each added one score in the 7-0 victory.
Glenwood's offense turned it up even more last weekend in Pueblo as the Grizzlies defeated Pueblo 8-2 and 13-4. Abrahamovich led Glenwood in the first showdown, scoring three goals while Ryan Fitzgerald struck twice and Guy, Tias Dacuma and Mark MacDonald each found the back of the net once.
In the 13-4 win, Abrahamovich scored four goals and Quint finished with a hat trick. Sam Carmer scored twice and Guy, Fitzgerald and Brody Erickson each added one goal.
The Glenwood PeeWees will take the ice at the Glenwood Springs Community Center next on Jan. 26 with a game at 3:30 p.m. against Greeley.
Kulwiec scores two goals for Glenwood Bantam hockey
Despite a pair of losses to Pueblo on Dec. 1, the Glenwood Springs Bantam (13- to 14-year-olds) hockey team saw some great play from Boris Kulwiec. Kulwiec scored an unassisted goal in a 6-1 loss to Pueblo in the first game, then scored Glenwood's only goal in another 6-1 loss during a night contest on the same day. In the second game, the goal was assisted by Joseph Capraro and Jake Bair.
Glenwood played two games against another tough squad, the Jr. Eagles on Saturday and Sunday, falling 4-0 and then 3-0.
The Bantams will next play at the Glenwood Springs Community Center Ice Rink on Jan. 19 against the Renegades at 1:45 and 8 p.m.
Former GSHS swimmer succeeding in collegiate waters
Swimming for Middlebury College, McDonald, a two-time state medalist for the Demons, took part in four victories when Middlebury hosted Springfield on Saturday.
Individually, McDonald won the women's 50 freestyle in 25.01 seconds and the 100 free in 54.53 seconds. She also swam legs on the winning 400 medley and 400 free relay teams.
Middlebury (2-1) won the dual meet 172-120 and will be off for about a month before returning to the water against Colby on Jan. 12.
Glenwood girls C basketball team dominates Aspen
The Glenwood Springs High School girls C basketball team increased its record to 2-0 with a 56-8 road win against Aspen on Monday evening. The Demons used full-court pressure and solid defense to gain a commanding early lead.
The Demons' balanced scoring attack was led by Hannah McDermott with 20, Kristy Moore with 12, Emily Gentry with 10 and Haley Amichaux with eight.
New Castle youth hoops pushed back
The start date of the New Castle Boys basketball season, for players in third through sixth grade, has been moved to Jan. 21. The season will run through March 8. Registration is being taken at the New Castle Community Center or online at

Register for Glenwood youth hoops
The Glenwood Springs Parks and Recreation Department is still accepting registration forms for youth hoops at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Local youth boys and girls grades three through six are eligible to participate. Age is determined as of Dec. 31 of the current year. Girls and boys will learn the fundamentals of basketball through practice and games in a fun and engaging forum.
Practices and games will be held Monday-Thursday, 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Community Center, starting Jan. 7. Registrations are being taken on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a $5 late fee for registrations taken after Dec. 1. Fees for participation are as follows: Resident, $45 and non-resident, $48. Only athletic shoes are allowed for participation.
