CARBONDALE - When Scott Gilbert, board president of the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, heard that someone wanted to donate two plots of land to the organization, his reaction was instant.
"Yeah!" he recalls thinking.
The call came on the morning of Monday, Dec. 10, hours after the Glenwood Springs Post Independent printed an article about the Smiths, a family receiving a Habitat home in Carbondale. Something about their story moved a Rifle woman to ask the organization about donating the lots, each big enough for a single home or duplex.
The details are still sketchy, and Gilbert wasn't completely positive the deal would even go through. All the same, he feels this is a great example of just how fast word can spread. Someone had this land, he explained, but just didn't have the know-how to get it in the hands of a deserving family.
For Gilbert, aiding those who need homes the most is "really a good feeling." He can only hope the more that people know about Habitat, the more they will want to take a moment out of their lives and give something back.
