SUNLIGHT MOUNTAIN RESORT - After a slow start to the ski season Sunlight Mountain Resort received a gift of cooler temperatures, bringing with it snow and people with planks on their feet for the holidays.
"We've been pretty busy," said Sunlight marketing manager Dylan Lewis. "Both parking lots have been filled every day."
That's enough to lift the clouds at the local ski mountain on a season that started out less than stellar, according to Lewis.
"We had a slow start but we've come through with the holiday traffic," he said. "Apples to apples, we're about the same as last year."

That's enough to lift the clouds at the local ski mountain on a season that started out less than stellar, according to Lewis.
"We had a slow start but we've come through with the holiday traffic," he said. "Apples to apples, we're about the same as last year."
Lewis said that the colder weather and recent snowstorms during the holiday break increased skier numbers to the same levels as previous years. The resort continues to see success with its ski, swim and stay program that has been marketed through the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association, packaging Sunlight lift tickets, Hot Springs Pool passes and a hotel into one trip.
"That program is still really strong for bringing skiers to the mountain," Lewis said.
But the weather did affect some of the holiday ski traffic at the mountain when one group, that had already booked a ski package with the resort was left stranded in Vail during the Interstate 70 closures, according to Lewis.
But that was about the only negative impact the storm had.
"We did have the one group that was caught in the storm, but other than that we are still reporting strong numbers from lift tickets alone," Lewis said.
But after the storm, New Year's Eve was busy with both parking lots filled once again.
"It's amazing with both lots filled and there is still no lift lines," Lewis said. "I think that has a lot to do with the level of skiers that come here."
Information on actual number of tickets sold for the last weeks of December wasn't available, but Lewis indicated that they were comparable to the previous year's totals.
"That program is still really strong for bringing skiers to the mountain," Lewis said.

Sunlight Happenings
Lessons will be half-day for beginner level skiers and snowboarders. Lessons will begin at 10 a.m. and all guests need to sign up at the Ski School window. Lessons will be limited to the first 20 skiers or boarders per lesson and are limited to persons age 7 or older. Participants will still need to purchase a lift ticket.

Overall, Lewis was impressed with the increase in business through the snowmobiling tours, with the addition of the shorter Tri-County Point Tour, which begins at the Sunlight Stables.
"The tours have been up over last year," Lewis said. "There is really no place close to go for snowmobile tours, you either have to go to Aspen or Vail, but we have seen an increase with the new addition."
