The New Castle Town Council passed a resolution designating a Dennis J. Mahan Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was established to honor Mahan, who served as administrative captain and records and evidence clerk in the police department from 1999 until his unexpected death in March of 2006. Mahan served as the chief of police in New Castle from 1990 to 1998.
"The fund was established as a memorial and tribute to Dennis and things that he valued in the law enforcement profession," said New Castle Police Chief Chris Sadler.
Funds from the scholarship can be awarded to civilians who wish to attend the police academy at Colorado Mountain College, or to current New Castle police officers who want to take advanced training classes. A portion of traffic fines in New Castle already goes toward a training fund for the police department, but the memorial funds would be awarded to a someone selected by a three-member scholarship committee who exhibits qualities that characterized Mahan's service.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the memorial scholarship can submit a donation earmarked for the Mahan fund through New Castle Town Hall.
