SILT - Three years after the state legislature passed a law allowing liquor stores to dole out samples at alcohol tastings, the town board is taking steps to allow it in Silt.

In 2004 the legislature passed a law that allowed a designated number of tastings during the year, between certain hours and with a limited number of samples being provided.

"Silt's ordinance would follow the state statute that requires all the tastings to occur up to four of six days between Monday and Saturday, with a maximum of five tasting hours in one day and not to exceed 104 days per year," said Town Clerk Sheila McIntyre. "The samples cannot be more than one ounce of beer or wine or a half ounce of liquor."

Customers are limited to four samples per tasting event.

The subject of opting-in to the state statute was brought up by Silt Discount Liquor, owned by former town administrator Rick Aluise and his wife, Janet, former community development director for the town.

Silt Discount Liquor in the Silt Trade Center is one of two liquor stores in the town of Silt. The other is Columbine Liquor, on Main Street.

Town board members passed the alcohol tasting ordinance on first reading with a vote of 5-2. Trustees Bobby Hays and Ron Morgan dissented.

The issue will go before the board for a second reading at the Jan. 28 meeting.
