Johnson is new Roaring Fork Conservancy ed coordinator

Sarah Johnson has joined the Roaring Fork Conservancy as its new education coordinator. Sarah received her bachelor of science in biology and a minor in geology from Missouri State University in 2005. She has taught environmental education for a variety of organizations in a number of states.

She has also been an interpretive park ranger at Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Shenandoah national parks. Her duties will include scheduling and teaching many of the education programs for students and Watershed Explorations programs for adults.

Pinnacol Foundation scholarships

The Pinnacol Foundation is accepting scholarship applications now through March 31, for the 2008-09 school year. The foundation provides scholarships for post-high-school education to children whose parents have been killed or seriously injured in work-related accidents.

The selection committee strives to provide an award to every student who qualifies. Since its inception in 2000, the Pinnacol Foundation has awarded $585,000 to 112 students for college, trade school and other professional training. Award amounts vary; the average scholarship is approximately $3,000 for one year. Students can reapply each year for up to five years, or until they reach age 25.

To qualify, a student must be the natural child, adopted child or stepchild of a worker killed or seriously disabled in a compensable work-related accident while employed by a Colorado-based company, regardless of insurance carrier. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, the severity of the parent’s injury, academic achievement, letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Re-2 staff talent show

Highland Elementary presents the Re-2 Staff Talent Show Dinner and Entertainment with dinner starting at 6 p.m. , and the showing starting at 7 p.m. Jan. 31. This production is a fundraiser for the annual Mesa Verde trip for fourth grade.

Komen for the Cure scholarships

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is accepting applications to award four-year undergraduate scholarships to qualified students who have lost a parent to breast cancer.

Degrees and honor rolls

Nicole Loschke of Parachute, received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism, magna cum laude, from Hawaii Pacific University, Jan. 9, 2008.

Chelsea G. Voorheis of Glenwood Springs was named to the University of Saint Mary fall dean’s honor list.

Sara A. Kurz of Carbondale, daughter of Jonathan and Ronda Kurz of Basalt, and Carol Hamilton of Carbondale, and a 2005 graduate of Basalt High School, was named to the Bucknell University fall dean’s list.

Celeste Seydel Cashel made the dean’s list at the Colorado School of Mines, where she is a senior studying civil engineering. Celeste is a 2004 graduate of Glenwood Springs High School.

Tara Darlene Keif was inducted into the Beta Omicron Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Colorado Mountain College March 20, 2007. Keif, from Battlement Mesa, majoring in nursing, is the daughter of Darlene Markle and Chuck Ballman of Parachute, and Simi Valley, Calif., and is married to Jimmy Keif.
