Glenwood Springs Rotary Club donates $11,000 to Rotary Foundation

Print Comment
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — The Rotary Club of Glenwood Springs has made an $11,000 contribution to The Rotary Foundation.

Funds came from individual members rather than the club’s fundraising activities. All 78 Rotary Club members are sustaining members of the foundation in that they contribute $100 or more per year.

Locally the Rotary clubs of the area have supported YouthZone, college scholarships, the gazebo in Sayre Park, the Advocate Safehouse, youth leadership programs, youth exchange programs and the Childhelp River Bridge Center.

The Rotary Foundation also recently accepted a challenge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to match their contribution of $100 million to continue efforts to eradicate polio. Rotary started this project 25 years ago and now only India, Pakistan and Afghanistan report polio cases.

The Rotary Foundation is partnering with the Rotary clubs of Glenwood Springs, the Roaring Fork Rotary Club, the Rifle Rotary Club, the Santa Fe, N.M., Rotary Club and a Rotary Club in Chihuahua, Mexico, to provide water and sewer systems for an existing rural boarding school of 175 students in Guachochi in Mexico. This will be a hands-on project, with Rotarians traveling to Mexico to assist in completing the project.

The Rotary Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through improvements in health, the support of education and alleviation of poverty, as well as international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the foundation. Charity Navigators awarded the foundation its highest rating of four stars for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances.

In another youth and education project, the Glenwood Springs Rotary Club is purchasing benches for use in the 30 new schools that Rotarians of the Guntur Rotary Club have built in the tsunami-affected areas of India.
