GLENWOOD SPRINGS An energy efficiency committee wants ideas about how the city can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency.
The Glenwood Springs Ad Hoc Energy Efficiency Committee is beginning its final task writing a climate action plan for Glenwood Springs. It would like to hear from the public.
Wed like everyone in Glenwood Springs to contribute their ideas, Hugh Plant, an
energy committee member, said in a news release. The community will also have a chance to review our proposed plan once we have a draft put together.
The committee determined city government buildings and operations produced about 7,337 tons of carbon dioxide last year, compared to 3,204 tons in 1990. The highest areas of energy consumption were the Community Center, vehicle fuel costs and street lights. The committee will make recommendations tonight to the City Council on options for a more detailed energy audit of city buildings.
The climate plan will set goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and guiding city government and residents to make the shift away from costly fossil fuel energy and toward energy efficiency and clean energy sources, according to the committee.
Committee members said they have been researching climate action plans already in place in other communities to get ideas, and already have a list of more than 40 items to consider including in the plan.
Anyone is encouraged to submit climate action plan ideas by e-mail to
glenwoodcap@gmail.com by Friday, Feb. 22.
