Battlement Mesa is actually just as old as its near neighbor Parachute, though it didn’t see much development until the 1970s and ’80s. That’s when Exxon Corporation began building houses and schools for the anticipated massive population of workers who were coming to work in the oil shale industry.

Early settlers are rumored to have named the area for the rock formation overlooking the town. They thought it resembled the upper walls of medieval castles.

The town, on the south bank of the Colorado River, was a ranching community before development started in the 1970s. And the area has not stopped evolving ever since.

The anticipated population jump from the oil shale industry occurred but it was relatively short lived.

The community was almost devastated after the oil shale industry bust in the early 1980s. Homes sat empty for years and there were virtually no jobs. The incorporated community saw a revival of retirees seeking a quiet and picturesque place to settle down as well as young families.

The area, acquired by the Battlement Mesa Company in 1989, boasts a community center with a swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course and several planned and carefully manicured neighborhoods.

Rather than a town council, the community is governed by a home-owners association.

Many Battlement Mesa residents take great pride in their community and sport “Ask me about Battlement Mesa” bumper stickers on their cars.
