Garfield County has two established hospitals, Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs and Grand River Medical Center in Rifle.

Valley View, which recently underwent a $29 million expansion, opened a 160,000-square foot addition in 2005. The addition includes the emergency room, diagnostic imaging, respiratory care, a pharmacy and a spacious lobby with gift and coffee shops.

The Family Birthplace, which was also included in the expansion, saw the birth of 845 little ones in 2007, up from 782 in 2006 and 649 in 2005.

Valley View recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The hospital opened its doors on Aug. 30, 1955, as a 35-bed facility. With the new expansion, it now has 80 beds.

It was established with funding provided by The Hill-Burton Act, enacted in 1946, and the assistance of the Glenwood Springs Mennonite congregation.

Valley View provides in-patient and out-patient surgical services as well as a fully equipped intensive care unit and 24-hour emergency room service. Valley View also has opened a helipad for transport of cardiac and head trauma patients by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction and Denver-area hospitals.

Grand River Hospital District was established in 1962 and operates with money collected from property taxes, and elected directors oversee the hospital. Its facilities include the E. Dene Moore Care Center in Rifle and the Battlement Mesa Medical Center.

The new Grand River Medical Center opened in 2003 and houses a clinic, physical therapy and surgery center along with an emergency and radiology center.

The center is equipped to handle 75 to 80 percent of the emergency cases that come through its doors, but it does not deliver babies. Baby deliveries and cases too serious for Grand River are sent to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs or St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
