The Garfield County Libraries system got a big boost during the November 2006 election when voters approved a taxing district to support new library buildings and building expansions. The district, which covers the entire county, is funded by a new, 1 mill property tax and a continuing quarter-cent sales tax, which was the historic funding mechanism for the libraries.
The district chose Amelia Shelley as executive director, and she took the helm in December 2007. She will work with the board of trustees and town and city governments and citizens to start the process of renovating or constructing new libraries at each of the branches. The county’s six libraries are located in Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle and Parachute. All are open seven days a week.
