GLENWOOD SPRINGS — To some, Presidents’ Day means just another day off. Here’s what four people around the city had to say about the holiday, the president and the upcoming presidential election.
Mike Giamellaro
What does Presidents’ Day mean to you? It means a day off.
What do you think about our current president, George W. Bush? I couldn’t think less of him.
What do you think of the current presidential race? It’s exciting. Not just the historic part, but it’s exciting to see the potential for something that actually is a little different in Washington. At least for me personally, it’s the first election in a while where I actually feel I’m voting for someone instead of against someone.
Which presidential candidate would you pick if you had to vote for someone today? Barack Obama.
Why? I feel like both he and (Hillary) Clinton are real strong candidates. I feel like if I vote for Clinton, she would do an OK job. I think voting for Barack is a little bit of a gamble but I think great things could come of it. … Really, all his views on health care and the war and just moving our country from this sort of ethic of fear.
Alan Lowe
What does Presidents’ Day mean to you? Just a day off, really. I liked it better when we actually celebrated the presidents.
What do you think about our current president, George W. Bush? Not much. I don’t like him.
What do you think of the current presidential race? I think the Democrats will win it this year.
Which presidential candidate would you pick if you had to vote for someone today? I’d leave it between (Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton), but I don’t know which one. I don’t like the Republicans.
Why? Because I think we need a change. Republicans — I don’t care for the way they’ve done things for the past few years and we just need a change.
Shane Bragg
What does Presidents’ Day mean to you? It doesn’t really mean much. I wish it was a day off.
What do you think about our current president, George W. Bush? He’s an oilman. I haven’t really cared for him because he’s sort of abandoned what the Republican Party is about.
What do you think of the current presidential race? I’m sort of disappointed with the candidates we have to choose from on either side. (John) McCain’s sort of a liberal. I’m disappointed I’ll have to vote for him because I won’t vote for a Democrat.
Which presidential candidate would you pick if you had to vote for someone today? Fred Thompson would have been the one I’d have voted for.
Why? Just because he’s a conservative Republican that believes in small government and doesn’t believe in all the earmarks.
Joni Weir
What does Presidents’ Day mean to you? It’s a good shopping day. It’s usually our first big weekend after New Year’s (for business at the Candlestick Maker, a downtown Glenwood Springs store that she owns).
What do you think about our current president, George W. Bush? It’s a good thing that we’re getting ready for a new election. I think that’s the best I can say about him.
What do you think of the current presidential race? I think it’s interesting because having a woman and an African-American is something different that we’ve just never had. It could change the direction in which we head. On the other hand, it could change absolutely nothing.
Which presidential candidate would you pick if you had to vote for someone today? Barack Obama.
Why? I think he has some of the most doable changes. I do not like McCain at all. Hillary — I’d love to see a woman make it, but for a lot of her ideas, we don’t have the funding to support them.
