STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Carrying smaller squads without the numbers or experience of teams from Vail, Aspen and Steamboat Springs, the Colorado Rocky Mountain School teams still managed to represent the school in fine fashion at the Colorado High School state skiing championships last weekend in Steamboat.
Sydney Schachter shone for CRMS, placing the highest of all the school’s skiers. Schachter, an alpine skier, finished 14th in the girls slalom and 15th in the giant slalom. Her combined slalom runs clocked a time of 1 minute, 37.5 seconds, while her two-run giant slalom mark was 1:46.0. Her alpine teammate Kyra Gabow placed 42nd in the slalom and 50th in the giant slalom.
Zoe Larner and Hilary Walecka placed 44th and 49th respectively in the day one Nordic race, while CRMS was led by Molly Surls (45th place) and Larner (46th) in the day two classic Nordic competition.
The CRMS girls’ marks were good enough to give the school an 11th-place finish out of 14 teams.
Fred Norquist starred for the CRMS boys alpine team, finishing 21st in the giant slalom with a combined-run time of 1:43.8. David Yanez placed 27th in the slalom with a two-run time of 1:32.8 as the CRMS boys, who were without any Nordic skiers, took 15th in the state.
