NEW CASTLE — The Garfield School District Re-2 school board approved Elk Creek Elementary School as the new name of the new elementary facility in New Castle at Tuesday’s regular school board meeting.
The decision passed with three votes, board members Brad Moss and Anne Guettler were absent.
Elk Creek’s mascot will be the Eagles, and the school colors will be maroon and silver. The name beat out the second-place option, Burning Mountain Elementary.
The new name is the latest in a major shift going on at the schools in New Castle. Construction of the new $14.5 million Riverside Middle School facility is more than 50 percent complete according to Re-2 director of facilities Craig Jay.
“We are a little ahead of schedule on that project,” Jay said.
School board members approved Riverside to remain the name of the middle school in New Castle after parents and community members showed great interest in keeping the name the same.
The current Riverside Middle School facility will receive a $5.5 million conversion into an elementary school over summer break.
“The differences between an elementary and a middle school include a lot of little
things,” Jay said.
Things such as installation of sinks in all the classrooms, removing the lockers from the hallways and changing counter heights. But several other major projects include remodeling of the roof, updating the fire suppression system, remodeling of the
kitchen, new carpet in the classrooms and other common areas, new wall paint, and
redefinition of the entryway, including a new canopy. Improvements to the parking lot
and playground are also planned.
Refurbishment on Elk Creek will begin on May 19, the first day of summer break for
Re-2 students, Jay said. The refurbished facility will be ready for classes come fall
2008.
“There will be a lot of work done,” Jay said. “But that’s the plan. We’ve not missed a
date yet. We’ve done a lot of planning and we are going to hit the ground running.”
The addition of a second elementary school in New Castle will alleviate the
overcrowding issues at Kathryn Senor Elementary. Currently, KSE has close to 600
students, but the school’s capacity is between 450 and 500 students. The two
modular classrooms at KSE will be removed over the summer because with the
addition of the new Elk Creek Elementary, both school student populations will be
reduced to around 300 students.
