A.R.F. is a valleywide nonprofit animal rescue organization that relies 100 percent on volunteer help. The organization is asking for more volunteers to help save even more lives. Many opportunities are available, from working pet adoptions and fundraising events to marketing and grant writing; from newsletter and website assistance to pet fostering.

The next volunteer meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Spruce Room of the Eagle County building in El Jebel.

“Safe Places and Our Thoughts” will be the topic for the 6 p.m. March 3 meeting of the Roaring Fork Chapter of The Compassionate Friends. John and Charlotte Sternig will lead this month’s discussion for family members whose children have passed away. The meeting will be held at Christ Community Church, just west of Basalt on Highway 82.

Spellbinders, a national volunteer storytelling group, will be hosting a workshop training for new volunteers March 6, 7 and 10. Spellbinders volunteers tell stories to children in Valley classrooms. All three sessions need to be attended.

The Redstone Community Association 2008 Winter Series program presents: Khumbu Ya-Ya, Trekking in the Everest region. The public is invited to this free presentation at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 2 at the Redstone Inn.

In the fall of 2007, local Redstone resident Sue McEvoy and her friends Colleen Carvelli, Teresa Jennings, Molly Garland, Karla Little Miller and Ginny Myers completed a twenty-day trek in this famous high-altitude region of Nepal.

Their particular journey took them along the well-traveled route through Namche Bazaar up to Gokyo and over the Cho La (17,600 feet), back onto the route to Everest Base camp and the overlook of Kala Patthar (18,315 feet), the famous monastery at Tengboche, and back to Lukla. Nepali culture and the best of their photos and will be the highlight of this presentation.

The town of Carbondale Tree Board is sponsoring two pruning workshops — a fruit tree pruning workshop March 8, and a tree and shrub pruning workshop March 22. Both workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the campus of the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale.

Certified arborist Jason Jones of Aspen Tree Service will share his knowledge of proper pruning techniques, tool selection and in-the-field demonstrations.
