When the weather outside isn’t very spring-like, spring sports moves practice indoors. The Glenwood Springs High School girls’ soccer team has been using the school’s auxiliary gym.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — While the struggles of snow covering fields and having to share gym time with all the other spring sports, the Glenwood Springs girls soccer team is having the same problems it does every spring.
One thing is new for the Demons however, as Bryan Stoltzfuz will be taking over the head coaching responsibilities in place of Linda Flohr. Flohr coached Glenwood for four years before stepping down to start a family.
Stoltzfus isn’t new to the program however, as he’s been a volunteer coach for Glenwood for eight years. He’s also done some coaching with Steve White at Colorado Mountain College. He knew he was taking over the team a while ago and began training with the girls earlier this winter.
“We have done lots of preseason training this year,” he said. “We started in December and had about 12 girls out twice a week.”
While the Demons are still waiting for a few girls (such as Chelsea Vallario, Kelsie Hert and Breanna Richardson), to join the team because they are on the Sweet-16 bound Glenwood basketball team, they still have a lot to work with.
A talented freshman class stared for the Demons last year and Stoltzfus thinks it will only be better this year.
“That was a good freshman class last year and now they have a year of maturity under their belts and we can see what they are going to do,” he said. “Lots of them are stepping into starting positions instead of coming off the bench like last year.”
Glenwood was scheduled to open their season on Tuesday by hosting Delta, but the game has already been postponed because there is so much snow on the GSHS field. The Demons’ next scheduled game would be on March 15 at Moffat, but Glenwood athletic director Steve Cable said there is a good chance that could be postponed, too. If that happens, the first game would then be on the turf field at Steamboat Springs on March 18.
Rifle starting season today
The Rifle Bears girls soccer team is wasting no time to get its season going, as it will open up the 2008 year with a Class 4A Western Slope League contest at Palisade today at 4 p.m.
Second-year head coach Mark Knighton said it does seem pretty rushed, especially since the Bears have had one outdoor scrimmage and one outdoor practice so far. Even though Knighton considers the team young, he’s also happy to have a strong contingent of returners to lead the squad.
“My hope is that we will be competitive,” he said. “We have Chelsea Webb, Mindy Gonzales, Morgan Patrick and Caitlin Clay, so we’ve got experience, but we are also going to be young.”
Webb, who was a guard for Rifle’s basketball team, won’t be suiting up today, however, as she will be out for at least one more week with a bruised kidney she suffered in her last basketball game.
The Bears will have a new face in goal this year after losing Kadie LaRoque, who was long-time starter for the team. Now Abbey Schmidt will be trying to fill her shoes. Knighton said she doesn’t have a lot of experience at soccer, but isn’t worried about it.
“She is super athletic. She understands the sport and instinctively knows what to do,” Knighton said of Schmidt. “That was a big hole we had coming into the season and I think she is going to fill it nicely.”
