PUEBLO — Grab a bowl of cereal and go play basketball, Grand Valley.
The Parachute school, which is sending both its boys and girls hoops teams to the Class 2A state meet in Pueblo later this week, were dealt their seeds for the eight-team affair on Sunday.
And both have rather early first-round games.
Grand Valley’s boys, the defending state champions with a 20-2 record, nabbed the top seed and will face No. 8 Sedgwick County (18-5) at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in the first round at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Center.
In case you’re wondering, Sedgwick County (the school) is located in the town of Julesburg, which sits near the Nebraska border up in the northeast corner of Colorado.
It’ll be a mostly new set of teams for the Cardinals to contend with at this year’s state tournament. Of the eight teams heading to Pueblo this week, only the Cards and third-seeded Sanford were there last year.
The Grand Valley girls (17-4) drew the sixth seed in their state bracket and will face No. 3 Holyoke (22-1) at 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning. Holyoke, tucked in the same corner of the state as Sedgwick County, enters the state tourney with a 12-game winning streak.
Five of the remaining eight 2A girls teams qualified for the state tournament last season.
Rams, Skiers in the 3A Great Eight
FORT COLLINS — Fresh off winning the Bob Chavez Region title, the Roaring Fork boys (19-5) play in the Class 3A Great Eight at Colorado State University in Fort Collins at 10:15 a.m. Thursday morning. The Rams will face Eaton (22-2) in their bid to make the Final Four.
Class 3A Western Slope League mate Aspen (22-2) takes the CSU floor at 8:30 p.m. Thursday against Yuma (20-4). Roaring Fork and Aspen could only match up against one another in either the state or consolation championship games.
Basalt’s girls are also still alive in the 3A ranks. The Longhorns (21-3) face Colorado Springs Christian (22-2) in a Great Eight matchup Thursday at 11:45 a.m.
