Sip, Chat and Play is the name of the playing card and board game recreation program every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. As part of that schedule, from noon to 1 p.m. a walking group, Marching Mountaineers, will also offer some exercise. Bea Vidakovich is shown playing cards with a few of her friends. Vidakovich jokingly commented that with this particular group, the program should be called, "Sip, Chat and Cheat."

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Marching Mountaineers is a new program for seniors offered at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. It has been available for participation for the last two weeks.

It’s offered as an opportunity for community members 50 and older to get together at a designated time to walk and interact with one another. Marching Mountaineers is scheduled within Sip, Chat and Play, another senior program offered at the Community Center, so seniors have the opportunity to have a cup of coffee, eat a healthy snack and sit and socialize before or after they engage in the walking program.

During the winter and colder springs months, walking will be done on the track inside the Community Center. Once the weather is warmer, the program will use some of the local trails.

Marching Mountaineers is a self-instructed program. Someone is always available at the community center to answer any questions and to get participants started. The contacts for the program are Shannon Derby and Brittany Matti.

Participants are given a pedometer (a device that counts the number of steps you’ve taken) and a weekly log to keep track of their steps. At the completion of the program, the person who accumulated the most steps will receive a gift bag.

At the final meeting date, participants may bring their family and friends to a potluck lunch.

The Marching Mountaineers program meets from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays from March 5th through July 2nd. It has a 15-participant maximum, but there is still room for anyone 50 or older to sign up.

The goal of the program is to offer seniors the opportunity to come to the Glenwood Springs Community Center and enjoy an afternoon with their friends, getting exercise and socializing.

“Marching Mountaineers is a great way to stay active and have fun with your friends!,” said program contact Brittany Matti.

For more information, call Brittany at 384-6312. Find your walking shoes and a water bottle, and you’re ready for the great outdoors or some laps at the community center. And you might even meet a new friend or two.
