Magazine ranks Rifle 17th best place to live
For outdoor types, the fun factor is high around here

RIFLE — The Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce’s website provides a list of area activities and recreation. The list includes hunting, fishing, golf, hiking, mountain biking, rock and ice climbing, skiing, snowmobiling and ATVing.
With all of its outdoor opportunities available within close proximity to the economically budding town, Outdoor Life magazine has listed Rifle in the top 20 towns in the nation for outdoorsman.
That fact has Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Annick Pruett very excited.
“It’s about time they realized that,” she said with a big laugh. “We already know it is, but wow, that is awesome.”
Rifle was listed at No. 17 on the list of top 200 towns across the nation for outdoorsmen. Fort Collins on the front range was the only town in Colorado to be ranked higher at No. 14 on the list.
Regardless, a ranking like this in a national publication will have a significant impact on the town and it’s recreational recourses, according to Pruett.
“It will have huge impacts,” she said. “Especially with the way things are economically around the country and the fact that Rifle is a growing economy right now, the fact that we rate so high in the magazine can mean huge things for the area. Not only in attracting visitors, but new residents as well.”
The rankings were based on towns of more than 4,000 residents, overall quality of life, growth rate, degree of taxation, work commute times, crime rates, housing costs, median household income and a variety of cultural opportunities within easy driving distance, according to the Outdoorlife.com.
On a scale from one to 10, 10 being the best, Rifle rated a seven on the amount of huntable species available in the area, a six on fishable species, and a seven on the trophy potential for hunting and fishing.
“Rifle has been picked as a top snowmobiling spot as well,” Pruett said. “Rifle falls was picked as one of the top 20 falls in the U.S., and of course, the rock climbing here is world renowned.”
