MOAB, Utah (AP) — Make way for big boxes.
The Moab City Council has voted 3-2 to allow large retail stores in town. A new ordinance will increase the maximum size of outlets from 75,000 square feet to 200,000 square feet — big enough for a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Opponents say having large retailers could hurt Moab’s unique character. But supporters say it’s likely Wal-Mart or a competitor would build south of Moab if the rules don’t change, leaving the city with the effects of a large store but no tax revenue to offset them.
