Literacy Outreach is looking for volunteer tutors to help people eager to improve English-speaking skills or improve reading, writing or basic math skills. Volunteers just need a desire to help, the ability to read and speak English, and at least two hours per week to work one-on-one with an adult.

Volunteer information sessions will be held at 6 p.m. March 31 and April 3 in Carbondale at Roaring Fork High School; and in Glenwood Springs at 1 p.m. April 1 at Starbucks in Glenwood Meadows. These informal, brief presentations will provide details about Literacy Outreach’s volunteer tutoring program and allow for questions.

A nine-hour training session will take place in Carbondale later in April.

The Lake Christine Shooting Range in Basalt will be closed to the public as authorized by the Colorado Division of Wildlife between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day March 31-April 3, for the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Venue of pistol and shotgun shooting. The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Roaring Fork Valley Sportsman Association and local Elks organization volunteers in conjunction with the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.

Glenwood Springs Middle School eighth-graders Alida Eide and Dara Chase have started a project to help give back to the Glenwood Springs community. They are making a chain of $1 bills to stretch the length of a football field, which amounts to a $6,000 donation to Operation Vacation to support the troops.

During their Dollar Chain Campaign, Alida and Dara will approach the community for donations of dollar bills to make the football-field-length chain. The project requires $20 for each foot. A football field is 300 feet long.

Donations are being accepted by the inch, foot, yard or total field. Donations can be sent to Glenwood Springs Middle School, 120 Soccer Field Road, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601, Attn: PEAC Project/Operation Vacation. Checks should be made payable to Operation Vacation.

Bring your rod and learn about the world-class fly fishing on the Roaring Fork River with Roaring Fork Conservancy from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 9. Avid angler, Kirk Webb, manager of Taylor Creek Fly Shop in Basalt, will lead this two-hour introduction to fly fishing at Old Pond Park on Two Rivers Road in Basalt.

The program will include an overview of Old Pond Park, practical entomology, reading the water, and a casting tune-up. Please dress appropriately; the event will happen rain or shine. This event is free; however, space is limited, and reservations are required.

The Valley View Hospital Cancer Center will be offering a new Coffee Walk and Talk Group at 10 a.m. Thursdays in the VVH upper lobby.

This informal group will meet every Thursday to walk outside, enjoy conversation, and return for lattes, coffee or tea in the lobby. The group is open to survivors of cancer and those presently in treatment. Family members are welcome to walk as well. Wear walking shoes and warm, comfortable clothing. Varied distances for varied abilities. No charge.
