Roaring Fork High School baseball team gets first win

CARBONDALE, COLORADO — Although the Roaring Fork baseball team was happy to get its first win of the season on Tuesday, the Rams weren’t as happy about how they got it.

After working to a 6-0 lead in the second inning, Roaring Fork was awarded a victory by forfeit over the Basalt Longhorns. Basalt head coach Rick Ryan was ejected from the game after arguing a baulk call and the Longhorns, who were without an assistant coach, were left with no one to direct the team. Without a coach, Basalt was forced to forfeit.

It was a disappointing end to what started off as a great game for the Rams.
“I’d rather win the real way,” said Roaring Fork head coach Steve Kinney.

In the first two innings of the game, the Rams were finding success on the mound and at the plate. Senior pitcher Jake Kinney had struck out the side in each of the first two innings. On offense, the Rams took advantage of a few Basalt walks when Matt Alberico slammed a bases-loaded double.

The win moves Roaring Fork to 1-5 on the year in the Class 3A Western Slope League and overall. The Rams will return to the diamond on Saturday to face Coal Ridge in a doubleheader at Cooper Field in Rifle.
