CARBONDALE, COLORADO — In the first half, Roaring Fork managed to hold a 0-0 tie with Vail Mountain despite having the Gore Rangers fire eight shots on goal compared to only one by the Rams.
In the second half, Vail Mountain continued its offensive dominance but Roaring Fork wasn’t nearly as lucky.
The Gore Rangers netted three goals, one on a direct kick, one on a corner kick and header and one on a close shot, to beat the Rams, 3-0, in the Class 3A Western Slope League contest.
“They looked more fit, more energetic than us,” Roaring Fork head coach Brad Zeigel said of the Gore Rangers. “They have a very good squad. It’s not deep, but their girls have played a lot.”
Roaring Fork managed a few scoring chances with quick transitions down the field, but couldn’t get any to the back of the net. Gore Ranger goalie Elsie Macsata made saves on all four shots that came her way.
“There were some neat chances. We should not have been blanked,” Zeigel said. “Their keeper did a good job of coming out on us and making stops.”
The conditions were much better than when the two teams faced on March 19 in East Vail. With two inches of snow on the field and more falling down making for whiteout conditions, the Gore Rangers earned a 1-0 victory.
Despite snow earlier in the week, warm temperatures on Wednesday made for pleasant conditions on the teams’ second meeting.
Roaring Fork (0-4 WSL and overall) will be back at home today when the Rams host Olathe at 4 p.m.
Up next for Vail Mountain (3-2 WSL and overall) will be another road contest at Coal Ridge at 4 p.m. on April 10.
