GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — The Glenwood Springs girls track team showed how talented its underclassmen are on Wednesday, winning the Glenwood Springs freshman/sophomore meet by a a wide margin. The Demons racked up 171 points, 47 points more than runner-up Eagle Valley.
The Demons girls won eight events. Glenwood’s Jolie Dubois led the way on the track with 100-meter dash (12.83 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.78) victories. Glenwood also piled up a lot of points in field events as Theresa Gabriel won triple jump with a 33-05 leap and took second in long jump at 14-01, while Bryann Milhorn won discus with a 76-11 toss, then took second in the shot put with a hurl of 25-08. Catlyn Bowles also recorded a win with the longest long jump (14-05).
Kristy Moore was victorious in 300 hurdles (48.28), while Taylor Goodstein placed second in 100 hurdles (18.18) and third in 300 hurdles.
Allison Brown showed her sprinting skills for Glenwood by winning the 400-meter dash (1:02.41), taking third in 100-meter dash (13.50) and second in 200 (27.82).
In distance running, Angela Shepard paced the Demons by taking second in 800 (2:49.05) and second in 1,600 (6:30.87). Casey McKenna finished third in 800 with a time of 2:57.58.
In the Demon relays, Dubois, Gabriel, Bowles and Goodstein joined forces to take the 4X100 relay.
Chelyn McCain starred for the Coal Ridge girls, who placed third in the eight-team
meet with 58 points. McCain won the 100 hurdles (17.62) and finished second in the 300 hurdles (50.56). Kathleen Maldonado also turned in a top-three performance by
finishing third in the 200 dash with a 29.34 mark. In the Titan relays, Rachel Becker,
Brandee Smith, Steph Hayden and Maldonado finished as runners-up in the 4X100
relay (56.78) and 4X200 relay (2:00.72).
Roaring Fork’s Kerry Honan acquired the only Rams points of the day by taking sixth
in the 100 hurdles with a time of 23.47 as the Rams finished eighth in the team
standings.
Demon boys take second
The Glenwood boys team also flashed its skills at its home meet on Wednesday,
taking first in five events for a second-place overall team finish. The Demons finished
with 114 points, 11 shy of meet champion Eagle Valley.
Like the Glenwood girls, the Demons were very strong in the field events. Wyatt Israel
took the triple jump by bounding 36-08 and then took third in the high jump clearing 5-08. Josh Galvan won long jump by leaping 18-02.5 and also placed second in 200 dash (24.49).
On the track, the Demons proved they were just as tough. Travis Whitman won the
400 dash (53.88) and placed second in the 800 (2:21.29). Ryan Buchanan won the
800-meter dash by eight seconds with a 2:13.56 mark. Garrett Brown and Jared
Peltzman rounded out the top-three individual placers for Glenwood as Brown took
third in the 800 (2:22.18) and Peltzman also finished third in the 3,200 (12:19.30)
Whitman, Brown, Nick Ciani and Buchanan teamed up to win the 4X400 relay
(3:45.25) and placed second in the 4X200 relay (1:39.93). Galvan, Israel, Ciani and
Kevin Carlson took second in 4X100, only .05 seconds behind Coal Ridge with a
mark of 48.18.
The Coal Ridge boys showed why the Titans have a bright future by winning five
events and finishing fourth overall with 86 points.
Blake Rivers shone for Coal Ridge, picking up wins in the 100 dash (11.62) and 200
dash (23.94). He then hooked up with Colby Fauser, Dusty Hibdon and Gary Bowker
for titles in the 4X100 and 4X200 relays with times of 48.13 and 1:39.34 respectively.
Individually, Fauser crossed the line in second in 400 (56.09) and third in 100 dash
(11.89). Bowker strongly represented the Titans in the hurdles, winning the 300 event
with a time of 46.02 and taking second in 110 hurdles (18.24).
