Grand Junction beats Coal Ridge
PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — When Chelsie Ryan found Audrey Asplund for a Coal Ridge goal, the Class 3A Titans cut 5A Grand Junction’s lead to 2-1 midway through the first half. Unfortunately for the Titans, it was the Tigers who scored the next two goals on their way to a 4-1 non-league win on Saturday.
“We didn’t play bad,” said Coal Ridge head coach Brian Blair. “We were playing with them pretty well.”
Coal Ridge, who dropped to 4-2 overall on the year, won’t have much of a break as the Titans will be back on the field on Monday to host Aspen. The Skiers are 4-0 in the 3A Western Slope League, while the Titans are 2-0. Both are at the top of the league with Basalt, who is only 1-0 this season but made it to the 3A state semifinals last year.
“Since we don’t have a practice between, I hope we can take what we learned and apply it to the Aspen game on Monday,” Blair said. “There are three teams who are all right there in our league and only two spots (for the postseason), so I am excited to see how we can do against them.”
Roaring Fork falls to Aspen
CARBONDALE, Colorado — The Roaring Fork girls soccer team saw why Aspen is 4-0 in the Class 3A Western Slope League this season as the Skiers routed the Rams 5-0 on Saturday.
The score could have been much worse had Ram goalkeeper Alli Zeigel not made 28 saves in the contest.
“They are tough in all aspects of the game,” Roaring Fork head coach Brad Zeigel said of Aspen. “We had some chances and we tried to counter them a little bit, but that’s about all we could do.”
Earlier in the week the Rams earned their first victory of the year with a 7-0 shutout over Olathe. Joey Clingan netted a hat trick in the win while Krispin Jewkes and Kathy Vega each scored two goals. Up next, the Rams (1-5) will play on Monday at Basalt.
