Alice M. Riley
Alice M. Riley, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at her home in Grand Junction.
Alice was born on June 1, 1917, in Hays, Kan., to Peter and Ludwina Unrein and spent her childhood in Sterling, Colo.
She married Bruce Riley on June 8, 1941. Alice and Bruce bought the Diamond J Ranch in Meredith in 1946 and built the lodge there from materials on the property. They used many local residents to help them build and operate the lodge and had a sawmill and cut the lumber on the premises. They ran the Diamond J for 32 years, and many people will remember Alice as a great cook and hostess for many hunters and fishermen from the common to the famous, including Walter Reuther and Minnie Pearl. They sold the ranch in 1978 and moved to a home on the Fryingpan River where they lived for a few years.
Alice lived in Glenwood Springs for a number of years and moved to Grand Junction in 1994.
Alice is survived by her sisters Patty (Jim) Hershfeldt and Mary Etta Weston, sister-in-law Melva Unrein and several nieces and nephews.
At Alice’s request, there will be no service, and her remains will be placed in Rosebud Cemetery in Glenwood Springs next to her husband, Bruce.
Donations may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
