GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Every Tuesday and Friday, an exuberant group of Glenwood’s wisest residents gather at the Colorado Mountain College Glenwood Center for a good meal and some hearty conversation.

Eighty-one-year-old Lorena Nadon was there on Friday, just as she’s been for most of the twice weekly senior lunches for the past 15 years. She’s been working as a volunteer for the Retired and Volunteer Senior Program (RSVP).

She enjoys the good meals, but she mostly enjoys the conversation and time with friends.

“It gets me out of the house,” she said. “We need to be active to stay happy and healthy.”

Her healthy smile is proof enough of the program’s effects.

Looking around the lunch hall at the Glenwood Center, smiles were frequent with the 35 or so senior guests who came for lunch. The program is a great success since it began in 1978, according to Nadon. And it’s still a vital part of their community.

“It’s is a very good program for us,” Nadon said. “I think it gets people out with others of their own age and gives them someone to visit with. To just be able to visit with people is important.”

It’s that neighborly interaction Nadon feels is most important.

“A lot of the seniors sit at home and probably have a long day without these lunches,” she said.

For Nadon, volunteering is just as much fun and gives her some busy work a few days a week.

The Senior Nutritional Meals Program, will be taken over by Garfield County beginning July 1. But the senior lunches at CMC will not change one bit, according to co-director of senior programs Mildred Alsdorf.

“We are going to continue to use the CMC facility and we will continue the meals as we always have,” Alsdorf said. “But we may need to expand a few years down the road.”

The senior lunches at CMC typically have between 30 and 40 attendees each day, according to Nadon. It’s remained relatively level over the years and both Nadon and Alsdorf think it has the possibility to grow.

“We are gradually getting a few more all the time, and that is helping,” Alsdorf said.
Most people come from the “manors” or senior housing in Glenwood and take the Senior Traveler, another senior program, to the meals, Nadon said.

But for Nadon, it’s so much more than just a meal. She usually shows up an hour ahead of time to help set up, and she sticks around to help clean up. In between, she finds time to eat and converse. She also helps out answering the phones on Thursdays for RSVP. She does that just because.

“I enjoy the contact with all the wonderful people that come,” Nadon said. “I’ve met some really nice people here.”

And she will continue to do so.
