Demons fight to draw at Palisade
PALISADE, Colorado — A second-half goal by McKenzie Kuhn pushed Glenwood Springs to a 1-all girls soccer draw at Palisade on Saturday.
Glenwood outshot Palisade 27-7 at the Peach Bowl, putting 14 shots on goal. Bella Caselton scored the Bulldogs’ goal, which came in the first half, on an assist from Lindsey Yaetes.
The Demons are now 8-2-2 in the 4A Western Slope League and 8-3-2 overall with two games left on the schedule.
Palisade sweeps Glenwood baseball twin bill
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Going up against one of the 4A Western Slope League’s best, Glenwood Springs had its work cut out for it Saturday on the baseball diamond.
After losing 13-1 in the opener of a doubleheader with Palisade, the Demons nearly knocked off the Bulldogs in the nightcap, in the end losing 8-7.
Jason Whiting pitched five innings of two-hit, two-run ball in the second game before hitting a speed bump in the sixth inning.
Whiting and Mario Gonzalez paced the Demons at the plate in that one, each going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Chad Sommers was 2-for-4.
“The second game we battled them,” said Glenwood coach Eric Nieslanik, whose team was playing its final games of 2008 and wrapped the season with a 6-13 overall record and 4-10 4A WSL record. “We had a lot of opportunities, and we broke through a little bit. We just didn’t get the hits when we needed to.”
Nieslanik’s Demons led the Bulldogs 7-2 going into the sixth inning before Palisade (13-6 overall, 11-3 4A WSL) charged back.
Glenwood bid farewell to its four baseball seniors on Saturday. Playing their final games were Whiting, Sommers, Ben Ziemann and Taylor Larsen.
Cardinals sweep Rangely in regular season baseball finale
RANGELY, Colorado — Grand Valley’s baseball team polished off a 9-3 regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Rangely on Saturday.
The Cardinals, who will face Dolores in the first round of the Class 2A District 2 Tournament in Cortez on May 3, beat the host Panthers 10-8 and 20-11 to wrap the 2A Western Slope League season at 4-2, which put them in second place behind league champion Paonia.
Rams swept by Cedaredge in baseball
CARBONDALE, Colorado — Roaring Fork’s baseball playoff hopes came to an end with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Cedaredge on Saturday.
The Bruins beat the Rams in Carbondale by scores of 19-3 and 18-1, leaving Roaring Fork with a final 2008 record of 5-11 overall and 3-11 in the Class 3A Western Slope League.
Basalt drops final two against Gunnison, helping Coal Ridge to postseason
BASALT, Colorado — With a pair of Basalt losses to Gunnison Friday and Saturday, Coal Ridge snuck into the Class 3A baseball playoffs, which begin with district tournament play on May 3.
Sailors top Rams in tennis
CARBONDALE, Colorado — Roaring Fork’s girls tennis team wrapped up its regular season against visiting Steamboat Springs on Saturday, losing 5-2.
The Rams picked up a win at No. 2 doubles by default and at No. 4 doubles, where Landon Garvik and Savanna Phibbs teamed up to beat the Sailors’ Eva Grant and Kaitlin Rudolf 6-1, 6-0.
Roaring Fork will next head to Grand Junction for Thursday and Friday’s regional tournament.
Keeper leads Demon swimmers in Junction
GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — Glenwood Springs’ tiny boys swim team brought back from Grand Junction a few high finishes from Friday’s three-team meet with Grand Junction and Moffat County.
George Keeper led the Demons with a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.74) and a fourth-place swim in the 100 free (55.94). Alex Moore swam to fourth in the 200 free (2:23.47).
