Hang glider pilot survives tumble down Aspen snow chute

ASPEN, Colorado (AP) — The pilot of a hang glider has survived a tumble down a snow chute on 11,700 Loge Peak.

Witnesses say the pilot nose-dived into rock as soon as he took off at a closed section of the Aspen Highlands ski area on Sunday.

Witness Tevor Jacovino of Aspen had been waiting with his video camera to capture the flight, but instead witnessed the tumble. The ski patrol from Highlands responded, and gave the man a pair of skis so he could ski out.

Pitkin County sheriff’s patrol director Mario Strobl has identified the man as Scott Nichols, Aspen Skiing Co.’s race department director.

Strobl says Nichols was not seriously injured. Strobl says it appears no laws were broken.
